Committee Expects to Hear Report on Iraq Wednesday

The Senate Armed Services committee expects to hear Wednesday from retired chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay on Iraq and weapons of mass destruction.
Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson is a member of the committee.

Kay recently said deposed Iraqi president Saddam Hussein apparently did not have stockpiles of forbidden weapons. Kay said the intelligence information that the United States went to war with was wrong.

Nelson said Kay's conclusions point to the dangers of President Bush's first strike policy. In December 2002, Bush submitted a defense strategy to Congress that includes potential strikes against nations that are threatening chemical or biological attacks.

Nelson said that doctrine has to be based on what people know, not simply on what people might think about a country's intentions.
