A 23-year-old man has been charged with kidnapping a Bellevue teen.
Sarpy County chief deputy attorney Patricia Freeman said Carlos Bautista was charged Monday with kidnapping, use of a weapon to commit a felony, terrorist threats and first-degree false imprisonment.
All are felony charges.
Freeman said if Bautista is convicted under the count of kidnapping alone he would face life in prison. The other charges carry possible penalties ranging from one to 20 years in prison.
According to Bellevue police, Bautista abducted 17-year-old Kristen Leigh Ann Benavides by knifepoint early Friday.
An Amber Alert was issued nine hours after her suspected abduction, the fourth such alert since the system was activated in the state in October 2002.
Omaha Police Captain Dave Friend said Bautista was arrested about six hours later after a high-speed chase through Omaha.
According to Benavides' mother, Wendy Belt, Bautista is the father of Benavides' six-month-old daughter.
