Report Blames Catholic Bishops for Abuse

The National Review Board released a report Friday blaming Catholic Bishops for not stopping sexual abuse of children within the church.

One Lincoln man on his way to Mass says he still finds the abuse hard to believe.

“All the ones I’ve had dealings with have been outstanding Priests,” said Bob Perkins.

The report says in the last 52 years there have been nearly 11,000 claims of child sexual abuse effecting almost 5,000 priests.

UNL Professor Robert Haller is a member of two Catholic lay organizations. He says Bishops are responsible for covering up the abuse.

“Blaming the Bishops is appropriate. They are the ones in authority. If they did not have that authority then you could blame the individual,” said Haller.

The Lincoln Catholic Diocese did not participate in the study.
