Property Taxes

Property taxes would go up under bills heard yesterday (Friday) by the Legislature's Revenue Committee.

Just how much they would go up is hard to know.

The proposals would give local governmental entities the right to tax more to pay for everything from improving ground water management to after school programs.

Property taxes are levied and collected locally. The state does not impose a property tax.

Given the variability of the tax rate in communities statewide, there is no good estimate as to how much more in taxes an individual homeowner would pay under the proposals.

Also, the bills would allow for a range in tax increases that would vary by school district, city, or other affected governmental entity.

The committee took no immediate action on the proposals.
