Drug Court

Shane Samuelson of Kearney had it all.

He was a self-employed contractor. He had a wife and two kids.

That all changed when Samuelson started using methamphetamine.

Samuelson's habit ruined his marriage and distanced him from his children. He was charged with felony possession of meth and entered the Central Nebraska Drug Court. After 13 months of sobriety, he is putting his life back together.

Samuelson was one of 15 people to graduate from the program Feb. 19.

The program puts chronic drug users under a law-enforcement microscope.

To enter the program, people charged with drug crimes must plead guilty. If they complete the program, the charges are dismissed.

Participants must maintain employment, pass random testing, attend counseling and drug treatment. Unsuccessful users are sentenced on their original charge.
