Authorities said a caseworker at the state prison in Tecumseh is recovering after being severely beaten by an inmate over the weekend.

Warden Fred Britten said the incident happened Sunday and is under investigation.

Nebraska State Patrol Lt. Mark Funkhauser, who is working on the case, said the staff member is still recovering in the hospital.

Funkhauser said the case worker's injuries are severe and that he will likely miss work for a while.

Britten said in a statement "assaults like this happen from time to time but are not typical."
