A pickup pulling a load of hay was hit by a train in southeast Custer County when it got stuck on a culvert.
According to the Custer County Sheriff's Department the accident happened around 1:30 pm Sunday afternoon. Keith Williams of Riverdale was driving a 2005 Ford F-350 that was pulling a load of hay from a private field on the north side of the railroad tracks. Williams was southbound, trying to get onto Highway 2, when the trailer became stuck on a culvert.
Before Williams could free the trailer, an eastbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe freight train struck the pickup. Williams was able to flee from the vehicle before the train hit. He was shaken, but unharmed.
The pickup came to a rest on the southern set of tracks, stopping rail traffic in both directions. The flatbed and hay were pushed onto the north side of the tracks.
Officers from both Sherman and Custer Counties were on the scene. The accident occurred about a mile west of the Custer-Sherman County line between Mason City and Litchfield. Around 2:30 pm officials were waiting for a wrecker to remove the pickup so rail traffic could resume. BNSF employees were also on the scene.
