Among the hundreds who flock from towns all over Nebraska for state basketball are a select few with school spirit screaming from every inch of their bodies. They are the fans with red, green and yellow hair, best wishes written on their skin with face paint, and bright knee-high socks.
The biggest trend this year for these teens is a step into the past. Both men and women are wearing retro jerseys. Some jerseys represent the last time their teams made it to the state tournament. Justin Plucknett of Louisville said, "we've got the retro jerseys from 1975 when we won it the last time."
Fans say they deck themselves out from head to toe to help cheer their teams to victory.
Courteny Gerdes of Randolph explains, "everybody does it because all the guys play a lot better when they know that we're out there."
