An 18-year-old Hastings man was sentenced to 12 to 15 years behind bars Wednesday for shooting a 17-year-old near an elementary school in Hastings last September.

Adams County District Judge Terri Harder said in sentencing David F. Henry that she hoped the punishment would take a dangerous young man off the streets and send a message to deter others from similar behavior.

Henry will be eligible for parole after six years.

He was charged with shooting Arturo Torres as Torres ran from Henry and his friend after a fight.

Torres has recovered from the shot in the chest and the wrist.
