Second-degree murder and weapons charges have been filed against a 26-year-old man accused in a stabbing death in Hastings over the weekend.
Jayson Garett is scheduled to appear in Adams County Court today on charges in the death of 45-year-old Daryl Peed, who died early Saturday.
Police said Garett is under evaluation at Mary Lanning Hospital.
Police investigators say they do not know of a motive in the case but say knives and scissors were used in the stabbing of Peed.
Police Chief Larry Thoren said the investigation has some "undisclosed elements to it." He said relatives say Garett gas a history of mental illness.
Court records show Garett threatened himself and others. Police said he became combative with two officers when taken to the hospital.
County attorney Donna Fegler-Daiss said she consulted doctors, and considered Garett's behavior before filing murder charges.
