Canada Ban Hurting Nebraska

The continuing ban on live cattle from Canada is taking its toll on Nebraska's beef processing plants.

So says University of Nebraska beef marketing specialist Dillon Feuz.

According to a report released Friday by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Nebraska fell to second place nationwide, behind Kansas, in cattle slaughtered. A total of about 488,000 head of cattle were slaughtered, compared to about 539,000 last year.

A key factor in Nebraska's slide is the ban on Canadian cattle.

Feuz said Nebraska generally slaughters more cattle from Canada than Kansas plants do.

After a Washington state Holstein tested positive for mad cow disease in December, nearly 50 countries imposed bans on American beef.

Feuz said those bans combined with lower U.S. cattle inventories and the inability for U.S. plants to access live Canadian cattle has caused companies to lay off employees or reduce their hours.
