Casino Gambling

It is the moment of truth for the Legislature's casino gambling plan. It is being debated again Wednesday for probably the last time.

Supporters feel they have 33 votes to end a filibuster. The measure is in the second of three rounds of debate. To pass it must get 30 votes to be placed on the November second ballot.

It would allow up to two casinos in the state.

Backers say they want it to compete with an initiative being circulated that would allow two casinos but also up to 4,900 slot machines.

Senator Adrian Smith of Gering vows to fight the measure. He objected to Speaker of the Legislature Curt Broom making it a major proposal and thereby allowing it to be debated again.

Earlier this session it fell one vote shy of the 33 needed to stop Smith's filibuster.
