Abortion Trial Near an End

By: Associated Press
Updated: Fri 6:55 PM, Apr 09, 2004

The trial in Lincoln over the constitutionality of a federal abortion ban could finish as soon as Friday.

The government has only a few witnesses left before wrapping up its case.

The trial centers on a challenge of the Partial-Birth Abortion Act signed last year by President Bush.

The measure bars a procedure doctors call "intact dilation and extraction," or D-and-X.

Opponents call it partial birth abortion.

Doctors who use D-and-X procedure have said it is the safest method of abortion when the mother's health is threatened by ailments such as heart disease, high blood pressure or cancer.

The ban has not been enforced because judges in Lincoln, New York and San Francisco agreed to hear evidence in three separate challenges to the law.
