Winnebago Tribal Chairman John Blackhawk said the opening of Treaty Hospital has been long-awaited.
Nebraska Congressman Doug Bereuter - who has been involved in the project for 16 years - was honored at the dedication of the facility.
Bereuter lauded the new facility, but said the real test of its contribution to healthcare for Native Americans will be adequate staffing.
Bereuter noted that the path to building and funding the hospital has been rocky - including roadblocks in dealings with the federal Indian Health Service and the Omaha tribe.
The new facility is slated to offer programs for diabetes prevention and treatment, mental health services, substance abuse and counseling.
