Opening statements were heard in today's case. Carhart's attorneys say doctors must have the ability to protect their patients to the best of their ability and that this law limits their ability to do so. They also say not having the late term abortion procedure as an option might put a mother's life at risk.
The Justice Department's attorneys say that's not necessarily the case. They also say there are no health advantages to the procedure. The trial continues Tuesday at 9am.
Dr. Carhart is expected to testify at some point during the trial.
