Legislature Puts Gambling on the November Ballot

Senator Ray Janssen of Nickerson celebrated the passage of LR 11CA with a hug from co-sponsor DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln.

It took Janssen four years of debate to gather the 30 votes needed to put a constitutional amendment on the ballot for voter approval.

The legislature's passage of the amendment doesn't necessarily mean that Casinos will become part of the heartland's landscape, but it's historic because this will be the first time voters can decide the issue for themselves.

Gambling opponents were in shock following the vote. Gambling with the Good Life president Pat Loontjer says it is a sad day for the state, and that senators neglected their duty by voting for the measure.
