A new electronic system is was used for the first time in Nebraska during a special election in Grand Island Tuesday.

Officials say the electronic poll book tells poll workers in real time whether someone has voted.

According to the Hall County Election Commissioner, this system is being used throughout several other states.

The electronic poll book deals with voter credit, so it tracks if you have voted, not how you voted.

Your voting information is now just a scan of your drivers license away.

"[It's] a lot more efficient, a lot faster," said Dale Baker, Hall County election commissioner.

Hall County is the first in the state to pilot electronic poll books.

"There's no more flipping through the pages looking for the voters name. They can just type the name in or touch it on the screen. They can scan their drivers license, pull up their residential data, and then they sign the book and off they go," said Baker.

The new system has proved useful during its first test-the Northwest school bond vote.

It's quickly spotted several people not eligible to vote in the election.

"If they belong to District 82 on their tax base and most of these people are rural [that can vote]," said Baker. "It's not the people that live within the city limits of Grand Island and so that's where the confusion has come."

Galen Meyer wasn't one of the confused.

"People were very helpful here so it's no problem voting," said Meyer.

Officials say the new system makes it easier for voters like Meyer to make his vote count and help poll workers make sure his vote doesn't count twice.

"I'm voting for it because I want better education for my kids and I think it gives them the opportunity to have a better education," said Meyer. "I think it's going to help the taxpayer out in the long run."

The voters using this new system are voting for or against a $6.8 million bond issue that would build a middle school for the Northwest School District.

Polling places will be open until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Polling locations are Northwest High School, the Saint Libory Fire Hall, and the Chapman Village Hall.
