A 24-year-old Nebraska City man faces felony child-abuse and assault charges, accused of using a cigarette to burn his girlfriend's 7-year-old daughter.

The Otoe County Attorney's Office says Joseph Jones Jr. burned the girl four times - three times on one of her lower legs and once on her chest. Jones has a preliminary hearing Monday on the charges.

His girlfriend, 36-year-old Bridget Person, recently pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault for hitting her 13-year-old son with her fist. Her sentencing has been set for Dec. 21.
