The only bar in one small Nebraska town could be gone after a morning fire in Clay Center.

After remodeling and reopening her late parent's bar this year, Kristi Sauvage wonders if she'll be able to do it all again.

"I've not been allowed to go in the building," she said. "Now that there's police line up I can get a little big closer, but I still can't see inside the building."

Just after 8:00 a.m. Monday, Clay Center firefighters were called to Fuzzy's Place.

"No flames [were] visible. There was smoke exiting the rear of the building through the door," said Fire Chief Tom Roemmick. "We had fire towards the middle of the building, took about 10 minutes to contain the fire."

"I've been told that there is a lot of floor damage and there is a lot of property damage as far as personal property in there," said Sauvage.

She says she's also been told by authorities that game machines were broken into and a large television was on the floor.

Sauvage said it appears there was a break-in at the bar, which was closed at the time.

She said there was also some smoke damage to the American Legion Hall, which is next door to Fuzzy's Place.

Authorities aren't saying how much damage there is or how it happened, but both the State Fire Marshall and the State Patrol's Major Case Unit were on scene.

Wherever the investigation leads, Clay Center residents are more concerned about the possibility of losing a business.

"It's the only bar we have in town and it's a big loss to lose any business in a small town," said Roemmick.

"Any business that wants to work in a small town needs to keep going as much to keep the town, keep people coming into the town for that business," said Sauvage. "Basically I need it back open."

Until Sauvage gets inside, she says she won't know whether or not her town will lose another business.

The population of Clay Center is just under 1,000.
