Hours before Senator Chuck Hagel asked a Senate committee about resuming the military draft, he attempted to contact a military sociologist who favors restarting the draft.

Northwestern University sociology professor Charles Moskos says Hagel's office called him early last week. Moskos is a longtime proponent of resurrecting the draft.

Moskos says they were unable to get together.

Hagel's office confirmed the senator tried to call Moskos early last week.

Hagel spokesman Mike Buttry says Hagel likes to talk to people who are experts in their field. He says Hagel still plans to talk to Moskos.

This disclosure comes after Hagel first publicly indicated last week during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing that it is time to consider compulsory military service. He stopped short of calling for a resumption of the draft.
