Casino Gambling

A petition drive to legalize casino gambling has collected more than 37 times as much money as another petition that would allow for slot machines at various locations across the state.

The Keep the Money in Nebraska coalition has collected $800,000 to date.

Its petition would allow for two casinos in Omaha and about 4,900 slot machines at other locations across the state.

A second petition drive would allow slot machines but not casinos. A report filed with the state Tuesday shows it has collected just $21,100.

The Committee for Charitable and Public Interest Gaming includes the state's quarter horse racing industry and veterans.

Petitions for both efforts continue to be circulated to meet the July 2 deadline. If enough signatures are gathered, the issues would appear on the Nov. 2 ballot.
