Allen Bluhn builds green-built homes for a living.
Green-built means environmentally friendly. The carpeting in the home is made from recycled bottle caps and the kitchen floor is made from bamboo.
This week he is opening the doors of one of his homes to the public. His mission is to raise money for the local chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association. His wife, Jean, was diagnosed with the disease a year ago.
The lives of Allen and Jean have been difficult for several years now. Friends no longer come over to visit, and Jean has lost the ability to perform simple tasks like dialing a phone.
Allen says, “It’s a really hard disease,” and Jean quickly adds, “Its an awful experience.”
The home at 2548 Southwest 12th St. will be open Monday-Friday 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost of entry is $5.00 a person.
