Nebraska Guardsman Returns With Warm Feelings for Iraqis

By: Associated Press

A Nebraska National Guardsman who served in Iraq says his experiences in dealing with the natives differs from what many Americans read or hear in media reports.

Contrary to a poll last week that showed 82-percent of the Iraqi people wanted the coalition troops out of their country, Major Matthew Kelly says he found that many of the Iraqis appreciated the American's help.

Kelly says instead of asking when troops would leave, they asked if they would stay.

Kelly is among 1,500 Nebraska National Guard soldiers and airmen who have served in the war in Iraq or Afghanistan. He was among the speakers at the Armed Forces Day celebration Saturday at SAC, near Ashland.
