Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel is criticizing top defense and state department officials for not knowing precisely how U.S.-run prisons will be handled after the transition in Iraq is complete.
Hagel made the comments toward Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz and Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage at a hearing before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee yesterday.
Armitage said officials hope to put the prisons under Iraqi control "as rapidly as possible," but said he didn't know what that exactly would involve.
Hagel said he thought after the firestorm about the photos of abuse this month that the government would put some time into planning how the prisons would be ran once the Iraqi government takes over control of the country.
