State of Emergency Issued by Governor

Gov. Mike Johanns has issued an emergency after tornadoes and severe storms swept through the state Saturday night.

That's the word from his spokeswoman Terri Teuber who says seven homes were destroyed in Clay County along with two farmsteads in Fillmore County because of the storms.

She says a total of ten homes were destroyed in Wilbur and Swanton in Saline County, where law enforcement confirmed tornadoes.

No injuries have been reported.

She says the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency will begin storm assessments in communities across the state, though it appears the storm hit hardest in south central and southeastern portions of the state.

Tornadoes did not cause all of the damage. Heavy winds took hold of an air conditioning unit at a Fremont Wal-Mart store. The unit landed on a sport utility vehicle.
