On Tuesday, December 29, 2009, the Mental Health Association of Nebraska celebrated the opening of the KEYA House, a unique and progressive program designed to provide adults living with mental illness with a safe and supportive environment to address escalating symptoms associated with their illness prior to the need of more invasive crisis level services.
Keya House (a Rose House model) is for adults at least nineteen years old with a behavioral health diagnosis, who are not in severe crisis, and who live in the Region V Systems service area.
Keya House offers:
o Peers helping peers with crisis prevention and diversion from psychiatric distress that may lead to hospitalization.
o A comfortable, clean, and furnished four-bedroom house in a quiet and safe neighborhood.
o Self help and proactive recovery tools to regain and maintain wellness.
o Trained peer companions who are compassionate, understanding, empowering, and available twenty-four hours a day.
Keya House is a program of the Mental Health Association of Nebraska and is made possible through the generous support of Region V Systems.

This is a very big step for the Midwest and I cannot say how beneficial I can see this house being. I myself being a consumer of mental health services was hospitalized numerous times. In reality, there were numerous other times I should have checked myself in, but did not because of reasons that basically came down to freedom. One may think it's not a big deal, but if you are smoker imagine just saying to yourself that you are going to go without a cigarette for several days. Sure it may be unhealthy, but it's a part of my life none-the-less. In this day and age of computers, just imagine going several days without checking your e-mail. If you cannot imagine that, that's alright for you cannot leave, so imagine not being able to take care of your house or pets, or the bills because you have no access to them. At this type of establishment, one is free to come and go as one chooses. Excellent job MHA! Keep up the fight! We need you!
Just touring around the Internet and came across the article featuring the opening of your new establishment. I had a friend who suffered from depression, and we, his many friends, always watched over him, and whilst everything turned out alright in the end, I would imagine that sufferers of Mental Health conditions could often be extremely isolated. Therefore, your new venture should prove invaluable, as are the staff who run it, often selflessly and without the credit that's due to them. It's unfortunate that many people are ignorant of Mental Health conditions, some even choose to be, but maybe this feature will enlighten a few. We can always live in hope! Congratulations, good luck, and very best wishes to your staff and users now and always. Oh, and Happy New Year too. Graham, England U.K.
