The third major storm of the season is impacting everything from school closures to dangerous weather-related injuries.

And Wednesday afternoon, city officials across the board said they're ready to take on the storm.

Safety is the big issue when snow and cold weather are present.

Bruce Dart, Director of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department says weather like this can pose a serious life safety issue.

As far as driving is concerned, Lincoln Police Chief Tom Casady is urging residents to use common sense when they're driving and parking in the city.

While parking on city streets is not banned as of right now, it's important to stay off the street if possible.

Chief Casady says, "Snow emergency ban or not, if you've got off-street parking available, if you can put it in the garage, up in the drive, please do so. Help us all deal with this. The street narrow is pretty extreme and we're dealing with lots and lots of parking complaints."

Bruce Dart says, "Frostbite and hypothermia can affect anyone so just do what you've always been doing, be cautious. As we get older, we're not Superman anymore and be aware of your own physical health status."

A lot of the points discussed today are issues city officials stress before every storm, yet they still see residents disregarding rules and safety tips.

Their hope is that residents will take their advice and stay safe during the storm.

Another issue highlighted was pets.

Health Department officials stress that while some animals are adapted to live outdoors, household pets can suffer the same type of cold weather injuries as their owners.

Please, please, listen to these leaders. Why do weather forecasters feel the need to stand out in negative windchills with a light jacket, nothing on their head or ears, or hands, and attempt to give a weather forecast? What kind of a message is then sent to children or unaware adults? If it is so necessary that a forecaster must appear in the midst of some type of storm, at the very least make the appearance of doing so safely. We value you and want you to be safe too.

Just wait the old farmers almanac predicted a Christmas Blizzard to the tee. It is also saying we are to get a 20 to 30 inch snow blizzard the week of Jan 13 thru Jan 17 and it also says that Febuary will be extremely cold with record amounts of snow so maybe the snow has only began and we will get a lot more soon. Let it snow, Let it snow, Let it snow. Nobody needs to dream of a white Christmas this year.
