Lincoln Public Schools have canceled classes on Friday, Jan. 8, due to an extreme winter weather pattern that includes significant gusting blizzard-like winds and dangerous, sub-zero temperatures and wind chills.
“Our community has experienced an extraordinary series of severe storms so far this winter, forcing our School District and many other Nebraska school districts to make some tough decisions,” according to Susan Gourley, superintendent of Lincoln Public Schools.
“When we look at any decision about closing school we examine a
combination of factors: snowfall, the timing of the storm, the forecast
of dangerous winds, and the potential for hazardous temperatures and
wind chills,” Gourley explained. “In the end, however, any decision to
close school is based on one factor and one factor only: the safety of
our students and staff.”
The current weather forecast calls for blowing and gusting winds,
bitterly cold early-morning temperatures of less than 20 degrees below
zero, and dangerously cold wind chills of 30 and 40 below zero. The
National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for Lincoln
until Friday at noon. Additionally, LPS maintenance officials report
that roads are impassable in many school neighborhoods due to blowing snow.
“The instructional time our students have in the classroom is precious,
crucial to our academic success, and we do everything in our power to
protect and maximize that time,” Gourley said. “Nonetheless, we cannot
and will not compromise the well-being of our children.”
Gourley explained that LPS builds additional instructional time into the
academic school year beyond requirements established by the Nebraska State Department of Education. However, Friday will be the sixth snow day for LPS – and from this point forward the School District will be required to make up missed instructional time according to state statute.
Gourley said LPS officials are now discussing possible solutions that
are educationally sound and in the best academic interest of students.
Possibilities include: exploring ways to lengthen the school day, and/or
adjusting the school calendar to use non-student days for additional
instructional time. “We are also working with employee groups to ensure a plan that is fair and equitable to our employees.”
The School District will continue to fully communicate all decisions
with the community, students and families, and LPS employees.
Even though classes are canceled, LPS would like all designated staff to report to school on Friday.

So, since it was so cold that kids can't go to school, why do so many parents let their kids go out sledding all day long in the same clothes they could wear for school?? Or going to the mall, I saw so many kids at the mall on Wed/Thur!! They somehow go there whether by walking/bus/or personal ride. So why can't they have same means to attend school?? Maybe LPS will get smart and eliminate some of the ridiculous vacations they have. I love having my kids home, but even they think it is unneccessary.
I think it was the right thing for LPS to do. They are looking out for their students not the adults becuz the staff don't walk to school. (most of them)School was closed becuz of the windchill not the roads. I see lots of kids and a day to day basis that are not dressed properly for winter and what if they walk to school???? I live 2 blocks from the school and I take my youngest and I can tell you he wouldn't of been in school the last 2 days had they had school. My oldest drives clear across town and alot of adults can't drive in the snow why would I want my 17 year old son driving in it?? I think calling it off Wednesday was stupid it was the warmest day of the week but Thurs. and Friday I totally agree w/. A friend of a friends kids was standing at the bus stop for 45 min. in -9 degrees actual temp. becuz the bus got in an accident. Imagine if that had been -30 windchill and they were standing outside waititng... Come on people Neb. or not IT'S TO COLD FOR THEM TO BE IN SCHOOL!!
I think LPS made the right decision. The class rooms are already cold then to add the extra cold air form outside, i think it would be silly to put the children of Lincoln in danger. The students will be a little stressed, but I believe our teachers can step it up and help our students more than they already do.
I agree with the school's decision to close school due to the exteme windchills. My mother does not agree with me. She sent me to school in any kind of condition with all good intent. She uses that argument of "When I was your age" we had to do this and that. My comment to here was, when you were that age you crapped in an outhouse. And I don't think we expect our kids to do that anymore either.
School should not have been canceled today. This was just one more time that LPS got it wrong. I understand if it is a blizzard but today? Really?
No I am not from Lincoln, but I do have friends that go to LPS, and do not live in town, but in the country. Are any of their lives any less important than a student that lives down the street from the school? The snow drifts in some areas are over 20 feet tall, and there are drifts from the wind closing many roads. Plows and Graders have not been down those roads. As for the city streets? Most of the side street are still terrible. They have not been cleaned, because there are so many to do. I have trouble driving on them, and I know other teenagers who do too. I know many adults and have seen adults that have problems, and they have been driving how much longer that us?? For the gentleman who cancelled LPS? Sir, you did the right thing! I want to keep my friends alive, and I DO NOT what to hear about them being stranded along side of a road, or in a ditch. Let alone at their funeral! All are Honor Roll, many upper % of their class, and most have perfect attendence!
First of all the diesel buses are plugged in & they run fine when LPS puts the winter blend in (former bus driver). Start school at 10 am like the other schools. Minnesota deals with this all the time, act like it not the first time it has ever been zero. All the helicopter parents FREAK out when things become difficult. Many neighbors (w/kids) take turns driving the kids to school. I watched kids walk by the house today wearing no stocking cap (middle school), their coats were unbuttoned. When the wind died down its wasn't all that bad. I know when I was a kid I was always outside w/ my sled.
What many fail to know is that much of the determination to cancel school is "Can the busses operate?". If they can't get out...call a snow day. You see, it's not just a matter of navigating streets in times of heavy snow..in this situation it's the fuel. Diesel fuel gels in this weather. The busses are all plugged in each evening utilizing the engine heater but this bitter is an exception. In this cold weather there are people that are out at 3 am to warm the fuel. Busses are started and they are left running until the driver arrives at 6 am...lots of wasted fuel there folks. Consider it a break for your tax dollar
I want to thank LPS for making a decision that is in the best interest of all students and staff. Yes, we all know Nebraksa is cold, bu this weather has been extreme and dangerous. I know for a fact that all of our Lincoln families are not prepared for this kind of weather. Thanks again for looking out for the safety of our students. Better safe than sorry.
I agree that school should have been cancelled today. What I don't understand is why my son was expected to be at wrestling practice the last two afternoons. I think it was very smart to cancel school today. Some children are even dropped off at school before the doors are open and many are not fortune to get rides. Some kids come with no gloves, hats, and I even saw a child come with only one shoe. Was late for the bus and couldn't find his shoe. So great call. The plowed snow is so deep around the schools, some sidewalks aren't even open from the streets.
I've never heard so many complainers in my life. Why would anyone want to put their child in harm by having them go to school in this terrible weather! The School system truly has your child's best interest in mind, when they make the decision to cancel! I also hear people complaining about having to remove snow around the fire hydrants, and mail boxes! Goodness! I am so thankful to live in a small town where we all work together to get the job done, and then also go out and help others, and everyone is more than happy to do this!
How many of you parents/teachers that think it was a good idea to cancel classes are actually at home, inside with your kids today and didn’t let any of your kids go outside what-so-ever today? OH WAIT……you are parents/teachers that are out driving around, running errands, going to the grocery store and enjoying your day off. AND you’re the ones taking your kids OUT to a movie, to the mall or to friend’s houses. Hypocrites!
To “Parent/Teacher” of course you would think it’s a good idea for LPS to close……you’re a teacher for pete’s sake, you just got a 5 day weekend!!!!! Go get a job that requires you to be there even when the weather is bad and your kids get called out of school and you have to pay or alternative care……then we’ll see how you feel.
For those “parents” who are glad LPS called off classes, you must be teachers so of course you’re happy…..this means you get a day off too. How dare you think that parents don’t care about their kids or want to deal with them at home and that’s the only reason they want them in school. You are unbelievable!!!! It’s more like, I have a job that requires me to be here every day and I can’t stay home just because it’s cold outside. And for those kids and parents that can’t afford coats, gloves, hats, boats, etc., sorry that’s not my problem. Go to the Goodwill, Salvation Army or better yet the Mission.
