Tornado Anniversary

Twenty-four years after multiple tornadoes slammed into Grand Island, the memory still haunts some residents.

Seven tornadoes hit the central Nebraska community killing five people and injuring many others on the night of June 3, 1980.

Jacki Marsh and her mother Velma Shafer are quick to take storm precautions. Shafer always keeps a flashlight and radio handy.

Last weekend the family had a number of relatives in their basement as severe storms swept through the area.

Meanwhile, officials are still trying to get a clearer picture of damage done from storms that have hit other parts of the state recently.

The estimated cost of damage to public property from last month's storms that spawned numerous tornadoes including one that devastated the village of Hallam is now more than $12 million.
