Hallam Tornado

The first federal checks have been handed out for Nebraskans whose homes were destroyed by last month's Hallam tornado.

Kevin and Maria Howat Wednesday were at the Lincoln site set up for Federal Emergency Management Agency relief efforts. They were pleased with the fast response by federal workers.

Kevin Howat says he and his wife feel very fortunate.

Meanwhile, the call is out for more volunteers to assist in the cleanup of Hallam. Lincoln Emergency Management officials say 200 to 250 volunteers are needed each day through Saturday.

Those interested in helping should gather at the Princeton Countryside Alliance Church in Princeton by 7:30 each morning.
