'Nebraska Walk For Life Brings Out Advocates On Each Side Of Abortion Issue 6 PM Report
Pro-Lifers, Pro-Choicers Turn Out to Annual Walk for Life -- Terra Hall Reports
Hundreds of pro-lifers took to the streets of Lincoln Saturday to show their support in the battle against legalized abortion.
"Pro life really is just the way to go," said Dawn Raun, a pro-life advocate. "I'm actually five and a half months pregnant and I just love the idea of promoting life from conception until natural death and really showing the support of the men and women who bring life into earth and to support those little babies who are not given the choice to speak for themselves."
Among the participants in Saturday's event, was Senator Tony Fulton of Lincoln.
"They're here because they want to speak on those who can't speak for themselves - the unborn," Fulton said. "It's been happening for decades and like I told the people, I think the logic of Roe v. Wade it's going to cause that decision to collapse under it's own weight. And once again we'll realize that the unborn are people too."
Pro-choice advocates also marched in the Walk for Life to show their support for keeping abortion legal.
"We just wanted to show that there are other Nebraskans who feel differently," said pro-choice advocate Brian Ellis. "That they support a woman's right to choose. They support sexual education in schools. They support access to contraception. And women's rights, reproductive rights in general."
While pro-life, Fulton says he is glad to see people standing up for their beliefs even if they don't share the same ones as he does.
"Regardless of the side that one is on, people need to make themselves heard," said Fulton. "The freedoms we enjoy are fleeting. We can look at other parts of the world and see how people don't get to express themselves."
Saturday's walk was in response to the measure known as Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion.
The Supreme Court issued a decision in favor of legalizing abortion on January 22, 1973.
