The Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia starts in five days. For some in Shelby, Nebraska there will be a familiar face on the bobsled track. A former Husker football player is hoping to make a name for himself on the world stage. Olympic bobsledder Curtis Tomasevicz grew up in Shelby, Nebraska.
This is Tomasevicz's second trip to the games. He says "Last time it was all just one big exciting whirlwind. This time I know what to expect a little bit more, I know how to prepare."
Tomasevicz is training in Park City, Utah preparing for the Winter Olympics. The former Husker football player is among the top bobsledders in the world. But he's not letting the excitement get in the way of his goal. He says the coaches do a great job of just keeping the athletes focused.
Family and friends back in Shelby are also focused, but in a slightly different way... One friend is making shirts and selling them to raise money for the Teammates program, and to send Tomasevicz's parents to the Olympics. So far Marcus Gillespie has sold 450 shirts and raised nearly $9,000.
Tomasevicz says it's that small town pride and attitude that got him to where he is today. And hopefully that attitude will pay off for team USA next week in Vancouver. Tomasevicz is hoping to win the gold medal. But he's also looking forward to the opening ceremonies and just being a part of the Olympic spirit.
