KOLN/KGIN TV (Ch. 10/11) wishes to announce its new morning anchor team: Jon and Taryn Vanderford. Jon Vanderford, who has co-anchored Ch. 10/11’s evening newscasts since 2003, made the announcement Sunday night that he and his wife will anchor the weekday 5:00-7:00am newscasts beginning Monday, February 15th.
“This is a unique opportunity to sit behind the desk with my wife and give the news of the day to our fellow Nebraskans,” said Jon. “Ever since Taryn and I were in college at UNL, we thought it would be fun to anchor together. Now, we are getting that chance.”
Pender native Taryn Vanderford has Nebraska roots and a strong broadcasting background. As a student at UNL, Taryn began a career in radio, which grew to include KFRX, 96KX, Knoxville stations WIVK and WOKI. She currently hosts “Design Time”, an interior design show which airs Fridays and Saturdays on KFOR. Taryn also served as a producer, writer and researcher on many television shows including “America’s Castles” on A&E, “Country at Home”, “Country Style” and “Restore America” on HGTV, and “Weekend Decorating” and “DIY Basics” on the DIY Network. Taryn returned to UNL as an adjunct journalism professor in 2005, and has done various freelance work as on-air or voice-over talent. She and Jon have two children, Jacob and Olivia.
“We are looking forward to bringing viewers the best, most complete news of the day,” Jon said. “Whether they are going to work, or getting the kids ready for school, we will be there to get their day started off right. This shift change also means my wife and I can look forward to more family time with our kids, which is very important to us. I guess I need to start preparing myself for a honey-do list at home...and at work!"
“Jon & Taryn bring several strong attributes together to best serve our viewers,” said Ch. 10/11 News Director Jerry Howard. “They share an understanding of Nebraskans, as well as a working knowledge of news coverage. They care about viewers, and they care about each other. I believe our audience will experience a special connection with this husband-wife team who is strongly committed to serving the best interests of our audience. For example, they know the priorities of working parents because they are working parents; they’re just working together now. I know that they bring out the best in each other.”
Jon and Taryn replace David Jespersen and Alicia Myers, who will now lead Ch. 10/11’s new in-depth reporting team. Meteorologist Brad Anderson will continue as the morning weather anchor.
“We’re bringing true journalism to the forefront,” Howard said of the in-depth team. “As a newsroom, we must dedicate the time and staff to research to get the answers which our viewers need. 10/11 will stand as the watchdog for Nebraskans.”
Another press release addressing changes to Ch. 10/11’s evening newscasts is forthcoming.

I really enjoyed Taryn .She is very confident, and relaxed. A real joy to watch, and listen to.
I agree with DD. Alicia and David would do great at Channel 8, and we would all watch. We can just flip over on the "10's" for Brad's forecast, then go back to Alicia and David! Problem solved.
I think Jon and Taryn do a great job! So do David, Alicia, and all of the KOLN/KGIN reporters that we love to watch on the 10/11 news/weather station. They are all very warm and friendly and energetic, with a professional yet personal touch. Keep up the good work!
Maybe if Channel 8 is getting rid of their morning anchor, they could hire Alicia and David and we could all be happy by getting to watch them again. The only problem with that is I LOVE Brad's weather cast!
10-11 makes changes to increase ratings. Ratings equal dollars. If you think they choose to make these changes on a whim, not likely. If you are really watching the morning show, you have to realize that there is a change in how Jon and Taryn are acting when compared to how they were during their first week. It seems they are loosening up. Even if they didnt, they are a much better choice than watching channels 8 or 5. This comments thread has become a bashing of Jon and Taryn which I think is undeserved considering they are "new" to the morning show, which is MUCH different than the 30 minute news shows throughout the rest of hte day. Just sit back and watch. I am betting it will become something pretty good. 10-11 seems to think it will too.
Jason Volentine is now an anchor for a Texas station.
I think this discussion has gone on long enough. Why doesn't Mr. News Director give us an answer to WHY THE CHANGE was actually made, and we can ALL appreciate an explanation. I personally no longer watch the morning show - as I do not care for the new people; but do try to catch at least one "Weather on the 10" from Brad. If I miss that - KRVN always has good weather reports.
What happened to Jason Volentine? Did he get ousted in the midst of all the changes? He always did a great job and was very professional, and brought personality to the news team.
It was so good to see Alicia on last nights special report. As usual, she did a great job. She looked great, I love her style of clothes. There is one of your reporters that should get a makeover...although she is a good reporter.
I am very disappointed in the new line up for the morning news program. How do you say BORING! I have been a long time fan of the 10/11 morning broadcast, and can not even watch it since Jon and his wife took it over. Was KOLN/KGIN that desperate to keep Jon that they would make such a huge blunder. This reminds me of the Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno mess. Please, please, please bring back the old team, or else this consumer will be going to the other channel!
Swith to 8, are you kidding me? I think this blog for the most part reflects a very small portion of the audience who were attached to Alicia and David. I see the work of Jon and Taryn as a vast improvement over what we were getting before. If David and Alicia were as popular as this blog makes them seem, management never would have felt the need to make a change. My guess is that ratings have already improved with the new team and will continue to go up as they have a chance to tweak the format to fit their talents. BTW, don't get too attached to the Channel 8 morning news anchor. It was in the paper on Monday that she is leaving permanently soon and moving to North Carolina!
Mimi - They chose a profession that places them in the crosshairs of public scrutiny. Their job performance is partly measured with viewership ratings. That's the nature of the business, and they are veteran broadcasters. We're not talking about 22 year olds just getting out of college. How can Jon be rusty? This really isn't a new job for Jon...yes the morning show is different from the evening news, but it's not like he hasn't been in front of a camera before! As a viewer, I'll give them a few days to adjust, but they should basically be hitting the ground running. And some of the negativity isn't directed at Jon and Taryn, it's directed at KOLN-KGIN management: They took away our morning show with David and Alicia. And yes, we the viewers, should express our opinion rather than mindlessly go along with whatever KOLN-KGIN management decides to do. We give them their jobs by tuning in!
When the change was made I thought that I would go with it ande give it a chance. After the first week I was done and switched to chanel 8. Jon is very professional would make an excellent evening anchor. OOPS, sorry 10/11 bring back Alicia and David. Taryn needs to find a new job with that great resume of hers, morning news anchor is not he stye. I made the switch to ch 8. They do a great job of combining news and humor with the weather and sports. The ratings have to be down and management needs to rethink the decision.
Maybe we should reflect back on our own first month on a new job and see how rusty we must have been. Come on, lighten up and give them a running chance. Its hard to put our best forward when one knows there's so many negative viewers.
Jon and Taryn are nice people, but not a good fit for this program. Sorry, it's the plain and simple truth.
