A family has been reunited here in Nebraska after surviving last month's earthquake in Haiti.
The Whites consider themselves lucky. Their home in Haiti only suffered a few cracks, but since the earthquake that rocked their community of 10 years in Port-au-Prince, they haven't seen much of each other.
"We sat down the day after the earthquake and looked at our options, what we had for supplies, what we had for gas and water, and what were the options of getting out of the country," said Will White. "We quickly made the decision that it would be best to have the families leave."
While Will has continued his missionary work, piloting for Mission Aviation Fellowship , Julie and their two children are staying with her family in Broken Bow.
"We were worried about our Haitian neighbors, and the school there that the kids are involved in, and the grocery store that we normally went to had collapsed totally," said Julie. "Most of the reports we've heard back have been that the people that we really know well have been ok. There was one Haitian pastor that did die in a building."
Will continues to see the devastation first-hand. His mission has changed from flying missionaries within Haiti to flying in doctors and supplies from Florida.
"[Help] is slowly starting to dribble out. The problem with some of the larger organizations that aren't really based in Haiti is they don't have the networks of trust in the community and so a lot of times when you see a United Nations, a World Food Program convoy going out with food, they'll a lot of times cause a riot or a mob," said Will. "Working with the local pastors and missionaries there, those were immediately going out to the people. they would stay in our cargo area maybe 24 to 48 hours and then it would be gone. We look at a lot the United Nations and some of the other programs, the food just stacking up at the airport because they couldn't get it out."
Will also says corruption could also be a challenge as Haitians rebuild.
"The corruption and the people that are in government wanting to get basically rich off of this disaster is going to be a problem," he said. "[But] they're very strong and resilient people and I think Haiti will come out of this in better shape then they were before."
Now the White family is back together, at least for a the next three weeks.
But before Will left for Nebraska he said he saw some encouraging sights.
"Some of the stores were starting to open up again. The banks are slowly opening up and life is somewhat getting back to normal," he said. "There's still thousands and thousands of people that are living underneath tarps and sheets."
No matter how normal things get, the Whites won't soon forget the Haitian earthquake they survived.
"Fortunately the kids were out in the front yard. Julie was in the kitchen and I was stuck at the back of the house. Julie was able to get out the front door with a cook that was there and I was at the back and couldn't. The amount of shaking that was going on I couldn't get from the back of the house out," said Will. "I was basically standing in the doorway hanging on because of all the movement."
"It was very terrifying and the floor underneath me just started rocking. It was like trying to walk on it-we couldn't really walk-but like walking on board in the ocean. It was very unstable," said Julie.
Julie gathered the two children outside. She says they were scared, but her daughter is already ready to return to Haiti.
Both children are currently going to school in Broken Bow until the family can return.
