Police have cited a 20 year old man for a vandalism spree that included at least 20 cases of the word "soul" spray-painted on buildings.
Officer Katie Flood said an officer was in the area of 48th and Adams at 3:00 am when he saw a car come out of an alley in the area. Flood said he got the car's information and when he investigated the alley he found the word soul freshly spray-painted on a building.
Officers tracked the car to 20 year old Jacob Adams. When officers went to interview Adams they found two backpacks full of partially used spray cans. His shoes also matched the tracks near the vandalism scene.
Flood said Adams is responsible for at least 20 different graffiti cases all across the city. He was cited and released for vandalism, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Brandon, maybe people in Lincoln don't like it because the victims of the "artist's" expression have to pay to clean up the "art". There's that thing about personal property, too. If I want graffiti on my garage or fence, I'll do it myself or hire a real artist, not a vandal (from the Latin word, vandalus-one who maliciously destroys or defaces property).
Well said, David. I wonder why these grafitti vandals don't pool their money and rent an empty old building, paint the inside of it white, and tag the inside 8 ways from Sunday. If it's good art, people will pay a couple of bucks to go through and look at it. Good art sells, but bad art doesn't, which is why they have to spray it on an alley wall.
He needs to provide some community service. I'm an artist as a professional and I don't ever recall a need to spray paint another persons property.Looks like the bum needs a job.Lets have him paint some elderly peoples homes this summer who can't do it for themselves. After about 3 or 4 houses he might reconsider his stupidity and think twice about ruining property. But guess what. He will get a slap on the wrist and he can go on his merry way to do more of this all over the city. If his "art" is so great why not just paint it on his own house? Or sell it for a living at a local gallery? Hmmmmm....probably because it's WORTHLESS!And so is Mr. Adams.
Brandon, give me a break. I challenge you to go tag any "art institute" in the country and see how supportive they are. Since when should people give up their visual space to just any joker with a spray can, an unremarkable word and a cliche style? Besides, isn't the risk part of the art? Why is it that YOU can't "go out and do this in town", rather than do "graff" in your garage? I don't think Mr. Adams is a bad person. I think he makes boring art.
I think that there are way more important things to worry about other than some graffiti. I enjoy seeing graff around town. keep it up boys.
to the people who don't think that graffiti is art, know this: graff is in fact an art. it's been here since cave drawings. i know this because i study it. it is the italian word for grafficar, meaning to scratch or write. that's exactly what he is doing. there is a place for everything and buildings can sometimes be that. there are places that condone graff, like art institutes and many places in europe such as madrid. there are even many skate parks around the US that let writers do their worke there so that they don't do this on buildings in the city. however, lincoln is so right wing that they won't build a cement park or give writers a place to go and do their art. so don't think that he is a bad person for doing this. i support the cause. i myself love to do graff on canvas and metal in my garage for the simple fact that i can't go out and do this in town. think about it. support street art.
now i'll have to start tagging "free soul"
yea that soul dude, he be kool
Umm, was it intended to be art? Heaven knows 20 year olds get validation from many different sources about how cool and subversive such expression is. Word to the wise, young man. Mediocre "subversive" art is still mediocre, and at any rate graffiti is not exactly subversive anymore. It's SO last century.
i have to clean this so called art off my business in the past, the very least that should happen is that the if car he was driving belongs to him it needs to be confiscated and sold at the next police auction to help pay the cost of the cleanup from his actions and then force him to do the removal of his actions. there is man hours to pay for. including chasing these people down documenting the crimes and then catching and prosocuting them. these crimes should be considered a felony, maybe that would slow them down in fear of jail time.
Reminds me of my dog that has to mark his territory by lifting his leg on anything he can find.
@ 2:44 All good, valid suggestions, but I'm afraid that it's just wishful thinking these days.
This spray painting vandal, is just a growing pain, as Lincoln, expands. I've lived in major cities, both in the U.S. and abroad. The larger the city, the more vandalism. In much of England, you can not avoid the spray painting. It's an endless sea, of graffiti. there's hardly any place left to write, if you can call it that. I'm not exaggerating one bit. You can ride the commuter trains, and buses and there's nothing but graffiti, as far, as the eye can see. It's on every building and flat surface along every train and bus line, It's on every street and building, in every neighborhood. It's also taken the form of window etching, on almost all trains and buses, to the point, you can't see out the windows. I don't think, it's stoppable. It's part of our times. Still! we must try! it detracts from the quality of life and injects fear, into peoples lives. It is, an implied threat, by mostly unknown sources, marking what they consider, their territory.
They need to make an example of him. He needs to remove all the spraying he has done, as well as other spraying in the city. He also needs to apologize to all the property owners, community leaders, and neighbors. He also owes our community an explanation, and his mother needs to be contacted. Also, his mother needs to apologize for having raised a child that would want to deface our community and contribute to urban decay. He also needs to incur debt to help subsidize the enormous amounts of funding we have had to pour into our communities in order to help combat such vandalism and the crimes and degradation of quality of life it fosters. If he were to do that, either out of gaining a conscience or judicial order, then I would accept him back into the community. Otherwise, he will never learn his lesson and continue to bring havoc to our city. Criminals do not deserve to be "punished" so much as they just need to right what they have wronged -or they will continue, not knowing guilt.
What a loser. The wind chill was almost 20 below last night, bone-cracking cold, yet he was out in that, vandalizing for free. If he wanted to work at night, he could have been stocking shelves at warm, dry Wally World - and getting paid.
