The Star City Figure Skating Club might be small and might not get much attention, but they're quickly growing in popularity and now they want a bigger, better place to practice.
The Star City Figure Skating Club is made up of adults and kids who love to skate, the problem is that they only have one ice rink, the Ice Box, to share with a lot of hockey teams, including the Lincoln Stars.
While most kids are still asleep, many young skaters are up at the crack of dawn to squeeze in their time on the ice. Public Relations Director of the Star City Figure Skating Club Cynthia Woods says with so many teams and clubs sharing, their practice time is cramped.
"We are here so early in the morning because we have really limited ice. We have to share this arena with the hockey players and all the different teams, the Stars and all the way down to the five-year-old hockey teams, so we only get maybe four times for club ice a week," Woods said.
That's why the club is supporting the new Haymarket Arena, because if it moves forward, the city will donate part of the land for the new Breslow Ice Center.
"Mr. Breslow has donated some money... he is going to have an ice arena built with two sheets of ice, and possibly a third one for outdoors, and that would create tons of ice for all of our skaters and hockey players here in Lincoln.
Arena Project Manager Dan Marvin says if the city votes "yes" to the arena, the city would donate part of the land for the Breslow Ice Center, and allow them to share in the arena's parking facilities. The rest of the money for the ice center would come from charitable donations.
Part of the problem for the skaters now is that the Ice Box shuts down from April through September, a key time in the figure skating season, so the club has to travel to Omaha several times a week for practice. Which is difficult for young skaters in school, and on adult competitors like Nance Harris.
"I'm an ice dancer and my partner is in Omaha, his name is Mike Barwig. We skate in Omaha twice a week to practice as well and we try to go to the Adult National Championships every year," Harris said.
She says similar competitions could even be held in Lincoln, attracting lots of people, if the new ice center is built.
"It will bring great energy to downtown. The arena will be able to host things like Disney on Ice and Stars on Ice for us, as well as probably some major ice hockey exhibitions, which would be great for the hockey club," said Harris.
So while the skating club has more than doubled in size in the last year, they're trying to insure their future growth by raising awareness.
"I don't think people know about the ice center because they're just not aware that we do have a community here in Lincoln that is involved in skating... but we just haven't been allowed to grow as figure skaters," said Woods.
The "Say No 2 the Arena" Committee says right now they're trying to substantiate the information they have before making a comment.

That is a wonderful idea, i was one of the first teachers to the skaters when the ice box first opened, when trying to be a figure skater of any sort you need a lot of practice time to support the skill, i feel having a rink open year round would be beneficial to not only the skaters but also to the city, ice skating tours more kids involved in a great sport, trying to do a jump after hockey has been played is no fun. Good luck everyone and when I visit I would love the chance to skate in the summer heat .
Many people often support using OPM, other peoples' money, to provide them with something they can't afford to buy themselves.
