Local law enforcement continues their streak of record-breaking drug busts as they uncover thousands of pot plants at a south Lincoln home.
Lincoln Police say a concerned citizen tipped police off to the home after learning about other pot busts earlier in the week.
Wednesday night, that tip paid off when police discovered 1,796 live marijuana plants in the home owned by Tham Cao.
Michelle Crowley used to live next door to the home that housed the plants. "The shades were never up, windows never open, I kind of smelled something, never really thought of it, I was thinking last night, had a hint over there."
Crowley was visiting her parents who still live in the home at the time of the bust.
Crowley says, "These cars pulled up and police got out and had guns and vests and ran up to the house and could hear them yelling and banging and no was there so they used the battering ram."
Officer Katie Flood, of the Lincoln Police Department, says, "Of course we've stumbled upon grow operations in the past, but none that are quite this large and sophisticated."
Police seized the plants at 1921 Connie Road. A neighbor living nearby tipped off police after hearing about previous busts.
Crowley says, "They said the upstairs was full, the downstairs and even the shed outside."
A short time later police arrested 34-year-old Tham Cao at a different home and charged him with manufacturing a controlled substance with intent to deliver.
Crowley says the bust came as a shock. "Pretty incredible, you think your neighborhood is safe."

well,i thought my uncle will never do this but he lied to me, he said don't do these stuff it will put you in trouble. but he was right pot do put u in trouble and he was a great person to hang out with but he lived to far away from me so i can't see all the time... but i wish he would never did pot...
How much do the cops sell a quater for ? you know the money they got will go in there pockets.
I Think so to Steve! Well said. Years ago it used to be legal and now thats it is illegal its hard trying to find any. Nice work LPD.
Come on. I think LPD should legalize pot.
Bottom line its illegal so you have to pay the price if ya get caught!
It is a fact that more teens are killed in alcohol related deaths than by illegal drugs. No i dont mean to say all drugs should be legal im not about that. Just think of all the alcoholics on the road with multiple dui's many of them in the past but still driving drunk. Im 55 and ive seen several people lose their lives to alcohol they died simply because they wouldnt quit drinking in spite of what warnings they had. I also knew tobacco users who died of lung cancer these people were NOT cannabis (pot) smokers just tobacco.I know absolutely no one who died from using cannabis (pot).Yes like many substances its effects shouldnt be combined with other things depending on the situation. In all I guess im trying to point out that it seems to me anyway maybe marijuana is no more dangerous or even less harmful then some legal things like alcohol. Just an opinion. its time
Stop saying it's worth millions of dollars. When cannabis is legal a pack of seeds will sell for about one dollar. It will be as cheap as anything in the grocery store.
ok Cuddy , Most of us citizens have considered the pros and cons of pot smoking... Now if pot smoking, drugs in general and booze didn't lead to slitting tires as last night incidents and the growing of pot in rentals and ruining the landlords property then maybe .But you and i both know its going to cost plenty to fix the homes and who do they think they are to destroy someone elses property . I do not get it why people think they have this right.
Personally I respect anybody's opinion on pot. However, I do not respect those who feel the need to be rude and inconsiderate of those who choose to partake in smoking pot. I use to smoke very regularly a few years ago to help with my nausea and body aches. I also smoked so that I would get an appetite to eat after battling anorexia and bulimia for 6 years at 84 lbs. I feel that it should be available to those with medical reasons, and the legal age to buy should be 18 just like tabbacco. I would rather see my children smoke pot, then risk drinking or using harder drugs. It is proven that marijuna shrinks some tumors, although it does NOT cure cancer. It would improve the economy drastically. The jails and prisons would not need nearly as much money, due to the fact most in the joint are there on pot charges of some sort. All I ask is that EVERYBODY, both those for and against consider all pro's and cons.
Dorothy, please do a bit more research before you make statements that are not true. There has been no report, EVER, that marijuana causes cancer. Or anyother life threatening health problem. In addition, Marijuana has been proven to help ease the side effects of very serious illness's. Who are we to tell someone that they cannot ease their pain with a plant. Have you ever drove after you had a drink of alcohol? becasue if you have you where at a greater risk at causing an accident then someone who has just smoked. Has there ever been a death due too a Marijuana over dose? the answer to that is, NO. As for landlords getting in trouble, they should know what is going on, on the property...thats their job.
Anonymous [who mentioned my earlier post], impaired people may be more likely to cause accidents. Unlike cigarette tobacco, studies have shown that marijuana like alcohol directly impairs judgement. But is marijuana therefore a substance that should be legalized like alcohol? I don't think so. Marijuana users also impose hazards on the public if they are intoxicated with marijuana and drive or operate machinery. But in addition they may exhale second hand smoke which may harm other people by creating cancer and other health risks, e.g. to children or pets. And, as many have mentioned, marijuana may act as a "gateway" drug to other forms of addictive substance abuse directly or by example. Also, landlords can lose their property if tenants violate marijuana laws (not to mention the potential property damage). Oregon at one time had a nominal fine for marijuana use, and voters there raised the penalties on account of the very real hazards marijuana imposes on the public.
Marijuana just needs to be taxed and legal.Ever hear of anyone killing people high on weed or doiong other offenses. Police have much better things to do than worry about people who are smoking marijuana. The goverment has something to do with drugs brought into U.S so why give other countries mny when we can make it ourself??
The real gateway drug is alcohol....ever hear of some one going out after smoking a joint and slamming into and killing a family of six? No! All they wanna do is order a pizza and play video games. legalize it dont criticize it!!!!
I found it coincidental that I had watched a repeat of a program on HGTV called Holmes on Homes...a contractor in Canada who saves homeowners from bad repairs or those deemed not repairable. In that episode Holmes repaired a "grow house" for a lady because they condemned the rental do to damage and contamination from the operation of the grow house in her rental home...in Canada her insurance wouldn't cover because the damage was done by illegal acts...also, home owners there can be held liable for the stolen electricity used by the growers. I'm curious as to the fall out from this on those landlords in Lincoln???? It could be an interesting story. Gateway drug or not, they distroyed the rentals that were used as grow houses!
Iowa is going to attempt to legalize Medical Marijuana next year. I hope Nebraska does consider the same action as the state already loses out on enough money to Iowa over gambling across the river. Also, legalizing and regulating Marijuana would mean less of these dangerous illegal grow operations in the city. If not there will be more of these grow centers due to rising local demand. It just makes sense to help those people with genuine medical conditions and help fund this great state with more tax money. This in turn will help LPD focus on Meth and other terrible drugs that actually destroy communities and lives. It's good to see locals discussing this hear, so let's try to keep this topic in perspective with mature and relevant comments, not just name calling and generalizing 'Pot Heads'.
