Gov. Mike Johanns says he wants a neo-Nazi rally at the state Capitol on Saturday to be ignored.
He and others are calling on people who oppose the rally to instead attend a diversity event at the same time.
The event will be at Pioneers Park from noon until 3pm.;
Organizers hope to divert attention from the National Socialist Movement event and prevent clashes between protesters and those at the rally.
The self-titled "Commander" of the NSM did not immediately return a message left Thursday at the group's Minneapolis headquarters.
Johanns says he had to speak out against the group, even though he knew it would draw more attention to its cause.
The governor will be out of state attending a national governors conference at the time of the rally.
The Capitol will be closed all day Saturday and extra police will be on duty.
