Nebraska officials want people to be careful with their account numbers, citing a sophisticated scam targeting a Broken Bow bank.

Officials with the state Attorney General's office and Department of Banking and Finance said Wednesday it's important not to give out account numbers in response to calls or e-mails.

The scam artists in this case used an automatic dialer to call all the phone numbers in the Broken Bow area to reach Nebraska State Bank customers.

The calls appeared to be from the bank, warning customers that their debit cards had been deactivated.

When the thieves obtained account numbers, transfers were initiated from Romania to drain the accounts. The bank has temporarily blocked all such overseas transfers to help fight the scam.
