A flag hangs at half-staff in front of Lincoln's Fire Station 9. Today is a day to honor those who lost their lives protecting others.
"That's what hit me the hardest, knowing how much the job meant to dad," said Jeff Grasmick, Lincoln Fire Captain.
Just over 30 years ago, Jeff's father Harley Grasmick died while on duty. The fire engine he was driving collided with a train, only a block from the station.
He became the fourth Lincoln firefighter to die in the line of duty.
"He was just like the greatest dad there was. He did so much for all of us."
Six years later, his son decided to join Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
"I saw how much it meant to him and that's what kind of persuaded me to want to do this as a career."
Each day, he follows the example set by his father.
"I guess in the back of my mind, to make him proud of where i am with my career"
