It has been 2 weeks since the 'Go Red' Challenge began, and things are going well.
The first week's meeting on August 27th was with Dr. Brad Hochstein of Synergy Chiropractic. The ladies are offered appointments at Synergy during the 12-week Challenge, and Dr. Brad Hochstein educated the group on the importance of having your body aligned. He stressed that, even when your body starts to ache, you have to keep moving.
"We want to stop because it hurts but, to be honest, we want to keep moving. The body wants to keep moving. Traditional chiropractic will take x-rays, figure out alignment. There's great things you can find with that. From our standpoint, we want to look at overall motion - how are you moving, what's moving, what's not moving, when are things moving."
The second half of the meeting was with Madonna ProActive dietitian, Katie Bolte. Katie talked about the importance of eating a variety of foods from all 5 food groups daily and reading those nutrition labels. She says to look at the serving size first, especially if you're comparing two products, because that dictates the numbers on the rest of the label. She also covered portion sizes.
"We get 6 servings of grains in the day, so you don't just have to eat that half cup of pasta. But when you are eating 3,4, 5 cups of pasta at the all-you-can-eat buffet - that's when we run into problems."
The 2nd meeting, on September 3rd, got the group on their feet! Trainer Karen O'Shea led the ladies in a group exercise. First, the ladies did cardio on the machines - treadmill, elliptical, and bikes for 10 minute intervals for 30 minutes. This was then followed by strength-training using the Keiser Circuit Training at Madonna ProActive. Karen placed the ladies in a circle and they did the 6 exercises for 45 seconds - twice around. The group agreed that it is much easier to see an exercise through if you are in a group - part of a team.
Oh, and by the way, in case you are wondering how the ladies are doing in the Challenge? Beth and Linda have lost some weight! Beth has lost 5.8 pounds, and Linda has lost 6.2 pounds.
