Kearney, NE The Kearney City Council voted Tuesday night to open a 1/2 mile stretch of the Kearney Canal to the public for recreational use.
The land was contributed to the city by the Nebraska Public Power District. The city hopes this is a start to making other sections of the canal that are privately owned open to the public.
The vote was unanimous with the exception of Mayor Stanley Clouse who withdrew himself from the discussion and vote. This was due to a conflict of interest because the mayor is a member of the NPPD.
