Connecticut Tragedy Brings Up Gun Control Issue

Updated: Mon 5:41 AM, Dec 17, 2012

Gun control is a heavily debated topic in the United States.

No matter where you stand, plenty of 1011's viewers have strong opinions on the subject.

With nearly 100 comments on our Facebook page, social media keeps the conversation going.

Joshua Hafner wrote: "Just one more reason for the federal government to think it's a good idea to outlaw guns."

Amy Robinson wrote: "The issue that needs to be addressed in all these tragedies is mental health; it is time to put away the politics and help people that are so lost."

Friday, President Obama released a statement.

He said: "Any of these neighborhoods could be our own, so we have to come together and we're going to have to take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this from happening, regardless of politics."

Astronaut Mark Kelly, whose wife, the former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was badly injured in another shooting rampage wrote this on Facebook:

"The children of Sandy Hook Elementary School and all victims of gun violence deserve leaders who have the courage to participate in a meaningful discussion about our gun laws. This can no longer wait."

Some say it's too early to even discuss this issue, but the issue has been brought forth once again.
