Officials say 33-year-old Michael Engstrom and his wife, 34-year-old Jaime Engstrom were arrested after the couple shot a deputy, opened fire at other law enforcement and robbed a Casey’s General Store at gunpoint in Pawnee City.

The pursuit ended when the suspects’ vehicle got stuck in a field near St. Mary. Officials say Michael fired at Johnson County Sheriff's deputies while the car was stuck. The deputy returned fire and Michael surrendered. Michael and his wife were taken into custody.

A pistol was recovered from the Ford Focus, it was out of bullets in the magazine.

At the time of their arrest, law enforcement officers also discovered that the couple had a 14-year-old female in the vehicle with them. She has been taken into protective custody by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
