Kansas Murder Suspect Arrested After Robbery and Gun Battle with Authorities in Nebraska

A married couple is in custody this Valentine’s Day following a series of events allegedly occurring in Pawnee and Johnson Counties Wednesday night in Southeast Nebraska. The man is also suspected of killing a man in Topeka, Kansas earlier in the day.

Officials say 33-year-old Michael Engstrom and his wife, 34-year-old Jaime Engstrom were arrested after the couple shot a deputy, opened fire at other law enforcement and robbed a Casey’s General Store at gunpoint in Pawnee City.

Around 7:30 p.m., a Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted the couple's white Ford Focus following the report of an armed robbery and pulled them over.

According to officials, once stopped, the driver opened fire hitting a deputy in the thigh. Law enforcement officers returned fire and the couple fled.

Officials say couple also opened fire at a Nebraska State Trooper near Elk Creek. A pursuit followed but was called off when the trooper’s cruiser got a flat tire.

The pursuit ended when the suspects’ vehicle got stuck in a field near St. Mary. Officials say Michael fired at Johnson County Sheriff's deputies while the car was stuck. The deputy returned fire and Michael surrendered. Michael and his wife were taken into custody.

A pistol was recovered from the Ford Focus, it was out of bullets in the magazine.

At the time of their arrest, law enforcement officers also discovered that the couple had a 14-year-old female in the vehicle with them. She has been taken into protective custody by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Deputy who was shot was treated and released.

Michael Engstrom was booked into jail for the following Johnson County allegations:
Attempted 2nd degree murder, a Class II Felony
Flight to avoid arrest, a Class IV Felony
Use of a deadly weapon to commit a felony,a Class IC Felony
Child abuse, a Class IIIA Felony

Jaime Engstrom was booked in on the following Johnson County allegations:
Aiding and abetting in attempted 2nd degree murder, a Class II Felony
Aiding and abetting in flight to avoid arrest, a Class IV Felony
Child abuse, a Class IIIA Felony

Michael is a suspect in a shooting earlier Wednesday in Topeka that left a 35-year-old man dead and a 28-year-old woman injured. The victim's name has not been released. Police said the victims were targeted and it was not a random shooting.
