Christmas is just 2 days away, and while many are finishing up that last minute shopping, the Red Cross is asking residents to consider giving a rare gift for people in need.
Longtime blood donor Austin Donner says donating this holiday season is his way of giving back to the community.
"I've donated blood off and on since high school, so this is something I've always done, it's a rewarding experience," said Donner.
Jana Remmenga works for the Red Cross and says getting donations is especially hard this time of year.
"It's the busy holiday season, everybody's kind of going on vacations to see family and busy shopping and buying presents, so it's hard for people to find time to come in," said Remmenga.
For people that desperately need those donations, they say a little blood goes a long way.
"One pint of blood that somebody gives can help up to three people," said Remmenga. "We supply blood all across the nation. We supply locally and then we send it wherever it's mostly needed."
Donner is a regular donor, and he's giving a double donation for the holidays.
"Giving blood is an easy thing to do, I qualify and it takes little to no time and effort," said Donner. "It's just nice to come in and help people out and save lives."
The Red Cross says people like Donner that embody their motto, "Give Something That Means Something."
