Driven to Give Raises Money for New Library

HASTINGS, Neb. -- Hastings Ford-Lincoln and the United Way of South Central Nebraska are teaming up to bring books to kids in the area.

As part of Lincoln's Driven to Give program Lincoln Motor Company will donate $20.00 from each person who test drove a Lincoln Saturday.

Proceeds will go towards establishing Dolly Parton's Imagination Library.

Parents from Adams, Clay, Nuckolls and Webster counties can sign up their kids and receive one book a month from birth to age 5.

The program is meant to help develop reading skills before a child steps foot in the classroom.

"We know early age literacy is so important," said Michele Henke, the Executive Director of the United Way South Central Nebraska. "35% of children go to kindergarten not ready to learn. A lot of children don't even have books in their home or age appropriate books."

167 drivers helped raise $4,100 for the program Saturday.

That was short of their goal of 300 test drives to raise $8,000.

United Way still needs your help to get the program off the ground.
