LINCOLN, Neb. Specialists from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will be on hand from August 21-25 at Menard’s stores in Kearney and Norfolk to offer free information and advice about better protecting houses and businesses from all kinds of Nebraska hazards.

FEMA says some of the information on hand includes: ways to fortify the exterior of a structure to better withstand high wind and rain, ways to protect major appliances from flood damage, how to add a safe room for tornado protection, learning the ABCs about flood insurance and other related topics.

FEMA says the mitigation specialists will be at Menard’s stores beginning Thursday, August 21 through Monday, August 25 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the following locations:

6411 First Ave.
Kearney, NE 68847

2311 Taylor Ave.
Norfolk, NE 68701

FEMA says mitigation has long been an important part of disaster preparedness and recovery because it is proven to work by saving lives and reducing or eliminating property damage, according to FEMA. Officials estimate that for every dollar spent on a mitigation action, about four dollars are saved when another disaster hits.
