A Central Nebraska landmark lies in ruins Monday after a major fire.
Firefighters were called to the Nightcrawlers Bar in Worms around 7:00 p.m. and worked on the blaze throughout most of the day.
Owner Steve Loeffelbein had few words as he watched his business burn.
"I don't know what's going to happen yet," he said.
Loeffelbein has owned Nightcrawlers for five years, but patrons have been coming for decades from surrounding communities. Monday firefighters from three towns attempted to save it.
"The fire started - or we think started - close to the back of the building and the back of the building was fully engulfed. It was working it's way toward the front," said St. Libory Fire Chief Chris Dvorak.
Ice, wind and snow proved to be a challenge for firefighters, forcing them to battle more than just the blaze.
"When we first got here we experienced one of our trucks was froze up, so it took us a little bit of time shuffling trucks around, getting a water supply going to the guys on the hoses," said Dvorak.
The fire single-handedly destroyed Worms' business district, which was down to one business. It's a devastating blow to the unincorporated community that has now lost one of its two only institutions. A church remains.
"[The bar} been here forever," said Loeffelbein. "It's a big landmark for everybody so we'll see what happens. I'm hoping to rebuild, but time will only tell."
Fire crews left the scene around 5:00p.m. Monday.
Chief Dvorak says they're not sure what caused the blaze, but they believe it started in the kitchen of the bar.
