Following Tom's Footsteps, When to Retire

In response to media requests, Athletic Director Tom Osborne has issued the following statement and does not plan to make further comment.

“My primary remaining job as athletic director is to facilitate a smooth transition in the athletic department, and I will do everything I can to see to it that this occurs. I was never under the impression that the hiring of a new athletic director would be my decision. It is important that Nebraskans give Shawn Eichorst every opportunity to have a successful tenure as the next athletic director at the University of Nebraska. He will be introduced to members of the athletic department next Tuesday.“

Nebraska's AARP Director Connie Benjamin says Osborne is one of many retiring later than average at the age of 75. She adds that retirement considerations have changed with the times.

"Defining retirement anymore is not the same as maybe you would do 40 years ago. People are not working, they're working part time they're continuing to work longer than before, so it really depends on that person," said Benjamin.
